The Queqiao2 (Bridge 2) relay satellite is part of China's Chang'e6 lunar exploration mission, which aims to bring back lunar samples from the south pole region of the Moon. Queqiao2 is designed to serve as a communication link between Earth and the Chang'e6 lander and rover on the lunar surface, enabling realtime data transmission and command control.
Launched using a长征三号乙运载火箭 (Long March 3A rocket), Queqiao2 was sent into a halo orbit around the EarthMoon L2 point, a gravitationally stable position approximately 64,000 kilometers beyond the Moon. This location provides a clear line of sight for continuous communication between the lunar probe and the Earth.
The satellite is equipped with a highgain antenna and multiple lowgain antennas to ensure robust communication capabilities. Additionally, it hosts scientific instruments for lunar and space environment research.
Queqiao2 follows its predecessor, Queqiao1, which served a similar role for the Chang'e4 mission, the first to explore the far side of the Moon.
